Nicklas Sapp
Bio
Dr. Nicklas Sapp is a dedicated researcher with a strong background in biochemistry and molecular biology. His research at Meharry Medical College provided the first direct evidence for specific histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) supporting HIV-1 integration, highlighting the role of host proteins like LEDGF/p75 and linker histone H1.
Inspired to pursue postdoctoral training in chromatin biology, Nicklas joined the Penn Epigenetics Institute. Under Dr. Ben Black, he studies the role of specific histone modifications in regulating chromosome segregation during mitosis. His work aims to understand how the chromosome passenger complex (CPC) ensures accurate chromosome segregation, using biochemical and biophysical tools, including Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM).
Nicklas has trained across a range of institutions, overcoming financial barriers and honing his networking skills to achieve research goals. His creativity and grit will now serve the broader Penn community and the Black laboratory. Nicklas aims to foster an inclusive environment that embraces diversity and independence while contributing to the field of epigenetics. He is preparing to compete for a faculty position, where he hopes to continue his impactful research and train the next generation of scientists.
