Marco Carpenter
Bio
Dr. Marco Carpenter is a postdoctoral fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where he is dedicated to understanding how environmental factors affect the origins of disease through epigenetic modifications. With a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Carpenter specializes in targeted epigenetic editing. During his graduate training, Dr. Carpenter worked in the lab of Dr. Elizabeth Heller, where he pioneered CRISPR-based approaches for in vivo validation of preclinical drug targets. His dissertation identified new therapeutic concepts for brain disorders, focusing on druggable transcription factors.
Currently, Dr. Carpenter is in the lab of Dr. William Peranteau at CHOP, developing CRISPR-based screens to identify novel transcriptional regulators important for treating pediatric blood disorders. His research aims to uncover how environmentally induced epigenetic changes can stably alter gene expression and cellular function, with the goal of developing therapies to target these changes. Dr. Carpenter is also a Diversity Fellow, advocating for equity in research topics and cultivating inclusive environments for underrepresented trainees. He believes that diversity in thought and perspective is crucial for innovation in science. Dr. Carpenter’s work at CHOP not only advances the understanding of pediatric blood disorders but also promotes diversity and inclusion in scientific research.
