About

The African American Resource Center invites the Penn community to an evening reception and talk with Ruth Simmons, a highly respected American academic administrator and educator. Simmons is known for being the first African American president of an Ivy League institution, serving as the 18th president of Brown University. She has also served as president of Smith College and Prairie View A&M University.

Simmons is the recipient of many honors, including a Fulbright Fellowship to France, the 2001 President’s Award from the United Negro College Fund, the 2002 Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, the 2004 Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal, the Foreign Policy Association Medal, and the Centennial Medal from Harvard University. Her book, Up Home: One Girl’s Journey, is a New York Times Bestseller.

This event is part of the Harold J. Haskins Lecture Series.
