The Brody Family Medical Trust Fund is excited to announce the 2024-2025 Fellowship in “Incurable Diseases.” This fellowship supports outstanding postdoctoral and clinical fellows conducting research on diseases with significant societal impact and no consistently effective cure, such as Alzheimer’s, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and various cancers.

The fellowship offers up to two years of financial support, providing annual funding of $70,000. This funding covers the fellow’s salary, lab costs, and related expenses, enabling recipients to focus on groundbreaking research in diseases with significant societal impact and no consistently effective cure. 

The BPP deadline to apply is October 1st, 2024. 

  • Research must be focused in the field of incurable diseases
  • One submission per institution is allowed.
  • Only Penn postdocs with an MD, PhD, or both are eligible.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have permanent resident status, or be able to
    demonstrate their eligibility to stay in the United States legally for the duration
    of the proposed Fellowship research.
  • Only Penn postdocs in the following schools are eligible to apply:
    • Perelman School of Medicine
    • School of Veterinary Medicine
    • School of Dental Medicine
    • School of Nursing
    • Department of Biology at the School of Arts & Sciences

Submission Process:

  • Submit proposals as a single PDF file to Subin Lee at postdoc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.
  • Include “Warren Alpert Fellowship” in the email subject line (e.g., Re: Warren Alpert Fellowship).
  • Filename format: Alpert_Last name,_first name_application (e.g., Alpert_Smith, Jane_application).
  • Documents should be no more than 5 single-spaced pages, with ½ inch margins and 11PT or greater font. The 5 pages do not include the bibliography, CV, budget, and 3 letters of recommendation.

Required Documents:

  • Title
  • Mentor name and department
  • “Application Coordinator” – contact information for the BA/grants manager handling admin paperwork or financial aspects
  • Summary of the research
  • Introduction, project importance, methods, and expected results
  • One-half page on the applicant’s background and special characteristics for implementing the project and career plan
  • Bibliography
  • CV in NIH format
  • Budget in G.300 R&R Format (SF 424 R&R Budget) with justification
  • Three letters of recommendation (sent separately to postdoc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu)
