How many Fellowships are awarded annually?
Penn and CHOP review the applications separately and make decisions independently. At Penn, the number of Fellowships varies from year to year but generally, there are from seven to ten. CHOP awards four fellowships.
Is the host department required to provide me with a private office?
Host departments should make every effort to find appropriate space during the fellowship appointment. Office space depends on availability in the host department.
Is there a residency requirement?
The fellowship requires that you live within the Philadelphia area unless the research program is of a global nature.
What can the research funds be used for?
Research funds may be used to purchase books, supplies, and any other materials needed for scholarly work. Applicants are advised to check with their department administrator.
Will I receive email notification that my application is complete?
Your application will be considered complete after the reference letters and mentor letters are received.
Will I be able to see the letters of reference and mentorship letters that are submitted in support of my application?
You will not be able to review the reference or mentor letters.
How do I request relocation reimbursement?
Fellows should submit a request for relocation reimbursement from the department administrator. Receipts are required. Reimbursement cannot be made without receipts. Relocation must be completed during the first year of the fellowship.
Can I apply to both the CHOP and Penn programs?
If you are identifying two separate mentors, one from CHOP and one from Penn, you will need to submit two separate applications. The applications are reviewed separately at each of the two institutions.
Will I be able to keep a copy of my application?
Yes. After completing the application, you will be able to download in a single file your uploaded application.
Is relocation assistance available?
Penn Fellows should reach out to their home department and school for relocation assistance. Should the department or school be unable to provide that assistance (normally they submit a letter stating such), The Office of the Vice Provost will provide up to $5,000 for relocation expenses. Please review Penn’s policy here. Under federal law, all reimbursements provided by the employer for moving expenses are considered additional compensation and subject to income tax withholding. Fellows should work with their Business Administrator in their department to begin the process. Relocation expenses will be processed through Penn Workday when Fellows are hired.
