Penn Postdocs in the News: Mahfujur Rahaman, Walter Benjamin Fellow, advanced novel low-dimensional semiconductor research at Penn with support from the German Research Foundation (DFG)

Mahfujur Rahaman, Ph.D., Walter Benjamin Fellow, advances low-dimensional semiconductor and optoelectronic device research in Penn’s Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering..

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Dr. Mahfujur Rahaman, a postdoctoral researcher from Technische Universität Chemnitz, joined the University of Pennsylvania as part of the prestigious Walter Benjamin Fellowship from the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is currently hosted by Professor Deep Jariwala in Penn’s Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering, where his research lies at the forefront of low-dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic device engineering.

Dr. Rahaman earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering, where he developed his expertise in semiconductor physics, nanoscale systems, and device applications. He went on to complete his research with a focus on advanced electronic materials and computational engineering methods, preparing him for highly interdisciplinary work across electrical engineering and applied physics.

In 2021, Dr. Rahaman moved to Penn to expand his research in optoelectronics and light–matter interactions. His current project explores the design and application of novel low-dimensional materials for energy conversion, photonic devices, and low-power electronics, including transistors, lasers, and photodetectors..

The Walter Benjamin Programme provides early-career researchers with the opportunity to conduct independent projects in Germany or abroad, supporting their academic independence and fostering international collaboration. Dr. Rahaman was awarded the fellowship in September 2021 to support his postdoctoral work at Penn.

We are proud to host Dr. Rahaman at Penn and celebrate this recognition of his impactful research through one of Germany’s most distinguished postdoctoral fellowships.
