Penn Postdoctoral Fellow David Yu, Ph.D., Named 2025 STAT Wunderkind

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Dr. David (Hyunmin) Yu, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, has been named a 2025 STAT Wunderkind, recognizing emerging leaders in biomedical and health research whose work is reshaping their fields.

Dr. Yu earned his Ph.D. in Nursing Science from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 2024, following a Master of Science in Nursing in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from Penn and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Inje University in South Korea.

At Penn, Dr. Yu conducts advanced training in Nursing Outcomes Research at the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research under the mentorship of Matthew D. McHugh, PhD, JD, MPH, RN, CRNP, FAAN, through a National Institute for Nursing Research T32 program. His research focuses on advancing health equity for LGBTQ+ individuals within healthcare systems.

For his doctoral dissertation, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. José Bauermeister, Dr. Yu analyzed Healthcare Equality Index data from the Human Rights Campaign to examine hospital- and state-level factors influencing LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices across U.S. health systems. He also conducted qualitative interviews with chief nursing officers and chief executive officers nationwide to identify facilitators, barriers, and effective strategies for implementing inclusive healthcare policies.

As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Yu expands this work by investigating how hospitals’ inclusive policies and practices influence nurse and patient outcomes, linking structural inclusivity to measurable improvements in healthcare quality and equity.

The STAT Wunderkinds recognition highlights early-career scientists whose innovative research demonstrates exceptional promise and impact across the biomedical and health sciences.

Dr. Yu’s recognition reflects both his individual achievements and Penn’s continued leadership in nursing science, health policy, and equity-focused research.

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Yu’s accomplishments and his contributions to advancing inclusive healthcare systems.
