Penn Postdocs in the News: Collin Stabler, Ph.D., awarded Hartwell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship
Penn Postdoctoral Fellow Collin Stabler receives Hartwell Fellowship for lung regeneration research
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Collin T. Stabler, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, has been selected for a Hartwell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. Working in the laboratory of Edward E. Morrisey, Ph.D., Dr. Stabler will investigate how the distal regions of the lung regenerate following injury, with the goal of informing new regenerative approaches to lung disease.
Dr. Stabler’s research focuses on the alveoli, the structures within the lung responsible for gas exchange. Although the lung can recover from some acute injuries, scientists still have an incomplete understanding of how the different epithelial, vascular, and supporting cell populations coordinate repair.
His Hartwell project examines the timing of cell death and regeneration following lung injury and how different cell populations mobilize to restore damaged alveolar tissue. This work has particular relevance to pediatric lung disorders, including complications associated with prematurity and congenital disease, where disruption of normal lung development can lead to long-term disability or mortality.
Dr. Stabler earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Temple University in 2016 after beginning his doctoral training at Drexel University. His graduate research focused on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, including approaches to improve revascularization of bioengineered lungs. He earned his B.S. in Engineering from Hofstra University.
By combining his engineering background with developmental and regenerative biology in the Morrisey Lab, Dr. Stabler’s postdoctoral training brings an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how damaged lungs repair themselves.
We are proud to celebrate Dr. Stabler and his selection for the Hartwell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship.
