Penn Postdocs in the News: Aletheia Cui Awarded Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Penn Postdoctoral Fellow Aletheia Cui, Ph.D., advances experimental linguistics through transatlantic collaboration

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Dr. Aletheia Cui, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, has been selected as a recipient of the Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The fellowship supports her research at Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU), Germany.

Dr. Cui earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020, following a B.A. in Linguistics from Cornell University. Her research spans general and comparative linguistics, experimental linguistics, and typology, with particular focus on sound change, language acquisition, computational modeling, and linguistic variation, especially in non-European languages.

During her Humboldt Fellowship, Dr. Cui will conduct research under the mentorship of Professor Jonathan Harrington at LMU Munich, a leading center for phonetics and experimental linguistics. Her work explores mechanisms of sound change and language variation using experimental and computational methods, strengthening international collaboration in the study of language structure and evolution.

The Humboldt Research Fellowship supports highly qualified researchers to pursue independent research in Germany and promotes sustained scholarly exchange between Germany and international research institutions.

Dr. Cui’s fellowship reflects Penn’s strong and enduring research ties with Germany, supported by longstanding intellectual exchange and cross-disciplinary collaborations across the humanities and sciences.

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Cui’s achievements and her contributions to advancing linguistic research through international partnerships.
