The Penn postdoctoral community is invited to apply for a professorship in Biomechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). This position is offered as either a W2 Tenure Track Assistant Professorship or a W3 Associate Professorship, with the opportunity for promotion to Full Professor. The position is based within the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the TUM School of Engineering and Design.

The successful candidate will conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research at the interface of mechanical engineering, human physiology, and system design, focusing on the development of biomechanical systems such as wearable robotics, rehabilitation technologies, and sports equipment.

Scientific Focus Areas May Include:

  • Human-centered design of biomechanical systems
  • Rehabilitation and assistive technologies
  • Sports and wellness technology
  • Human-machine interaction and ergonomics
  • Digital human modeling, simulation, and motion analysis

Please note: German language skills are not required at the time of application. Instruction and support will be provided to help the selected candidate prepare to teach in German.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • PhD and postdoctoral research experience in biomechanical engineering or a related field
  • Strong international publication record and teaching experience
  • Demonstrated potential for independent research leadership
  • At least one year of research experience abroad during or after the PhD
  • Applicants must be 51 or under at the time of appointment (exceptions possible)
  • Teaching experience preferred; readiness to teach in German within three years
  • Willingness to participate in university service and academic self-governance

Position Details:

  • Start date: As soon as possible
  • Initial term: 6 years (W2 level); tenure to W3 level possible following evaluation
  • Teaching required in English-language programs, including:
    • BSc Sports Science
    • MSc Human Factors Engineering
    • MSc Mechatronics, Robotics & Biomechanical Engineering
  • Participation in student selection, curriculum development, and academic governance
  • Salary: Competitive, with performance-based supplements and family benefits
  • German instruction will be provided if needed
